Visiting Children’s Homes – Hajdú-Bihar County Children’s Home Center – Homes in Komádi and Hajdúböszörmény – June 2022

We visited two children’s homes in the county. One of them was a 48-bed children’s home in Komádi, and the other was the special needs residential homes in Hajdúböszörmény, each of which provides care for up to 8 children.

In Komádi, the children were eagerly awaiting our arrival and were a huge help, enthusiastically carrying and unpacking the donations. They were excited about the new sports equipment, including a ping-pong table, a darts machine, a gaming table, an air hockey table, a poker table, a foosball table, and many other sports accessories, along with board games that will certainly be enjoyed throughout the summer.

Our second stop was the special needs children’s home in Hajdúböszörmény, where the residents surprised us with a wonderful dance performance. Afterward, the children warmly took us by the hand and gave us a tour of their homes, which they’ve lovingly named Tűzvirág (Fireflower), Vadrózsa (Wild Rose), and Futrinka (Ladybug). The homes had a cozy, family-like atmosphere, with beautifully renovated rooms and common areas, all impeccably maintained and decorated with the children’s artwork. Outside, the grassy yard, flower gardens, playground equipment, and sandbox provided plenty of opportunities for fun and meaningful outdoor activities. This time, we helped improve their outdoor space with a playhouse, a pool set, and many other games and skill-building toys. However, it was clear that what excited the children most was our visit and the time we spent together that afternoon.

During our visit, we gained insight into how these residential homes provide modern living spaces for children and youth, creating an environment that closely resembles family life while offering high-quality, comprehensive care. Children placed in these homes are assigned to the unit that best supports their socialization, based on their unique personalities. It was clear that the homes are well-designed to encourage a calm, family-like atmosphere that offers a safe and nurturing space for children with special needs or intellectual disabilities. Their education is provided at a nearby elementary school, with lessons tailored to meet their individual needs.

We are deeply grateful for the experience and for the opportunity to get a brief glimpse into their lives.
