Visiting Children’s Homes – Special Children’s Home of the Békés County’s Social and Child Protection Center – June 2022

The Social Institution of the Békés County Social and Child Protection Center in Békéscsaba operates as a multi-profile institution, offering a wide range of care services. During our visit and guided tour with the institution’s director, we were introduced to all areas of care within the facility, gaining valuable insights into every aspect of its operations.

The institution has been operating for about 40 years and provides comprehensive care for people with intellectual and multiple disabilities who require long-term care and are either unable to care for themselves or are only partially able to do so. We had the opportunity to visit different departments of the institution, where we met residents with severe and multiple disabilities who were bedridden or wheelchair-bound, as well as moderately to severely intellectually disabled boys/men who could walk independently. On another ward, we met girls/women in similar situations and young adults over the age of 18 with mild intellectual disabilities.

The rehabilitation section of the facility offers services aimed at developing and restoring independent living skills. This section supports young people who can act independently or are under guardianship with limited decision-making capacity but can move independently and are suitable for rehabilitation. With the assistance of a social worker, residents take part in life skills training and engage in developmental activities. Throughout the day, they participate in gardening, selling the vegetables and fruits they grow, weaving household textiles, and engaging in a variety of handcraft activities to enhance and decorate their environment.

Next, we visited the institution’s Special Children’s Home, which provides care for minors with special needs, where we delivered our donations. These contributions were distributed among several children’s homes and residential care facilities within the county. This time, our donations primarily consisted of furniture, including sofas, dining sets, bedroom furniture, and bathroom cabinets. Additionally, we provided vacuum cleaners, several bicycles, and multiple TVs.
