Experience Grant 2025 – Summer Holiday of the Tolna County Child Protection Center

The goal of the Tolna County institution’s grant proposal was to ensure that children could rest after the school year, gather new experiences, and take part in community programs that strengthen cooperation, friendship, self-confidence, and provide insight into Roma culture. Their Roma-themed camp, titled “Hand in Hand,” offered a memorable holiday experience for nearly 50 children in the charming campground of Fadd-Dombori, which they had entirely to themselves.

For six days, the children participated in activities designed to strengthen their identity and sense of belonging, while also developing their life skills, social and emotional competencies.

During the day, in addition to craft workshops and Roma culture and dance sessions, swimming was the main attraction—the children eagerly competed to see who could stay in the water the longest. Besides the craft programs, the most popular activity was the open-air movie nights. Wrapped in blankets, popcorn in hand, they laughed and held their breath together as they watched the films under the stars.

Meals were also a special part of the experience, as the group enjoyed communal bacon roasting and a grill party. The children waited with great excitement to find out what would be for lunch each day, and proudly reported—always with a big smile—that it was their favorite.

According to the caregivers, by the end of the camp, friendships had visibly strengthened, the children became more open toward one another, and many found the courage to try new things. The participants returned home with smiles, unforgettable memories, and a strong desire to be part of this very special summer program again next year.
