Experience Grant 2024 – Beyond the Sea

Building on the success of last year’s program, the Somogy County Child Protection Center’s holiday plans were once again chosen to receive our Experience Grant. This year’s program was even more unique, with a goal that was especially close to their hearts: to take the children to the sea for the first time in their lives. At the end of July, this dream

came true as a group of 25 children and 6 adults traveled to Razanac, located on the Adriatic coast of Croatia.

The journey itself was filled with excitement, as the children experienced many new and unfamiliar things along the way. When they finally arrived at the sea, it exceeded all their expectations. Daily swimming sessions became a highlight, but the camp offered so much more. One of the key elements of the program was an arts initiative, where the artistic director, using activities from the “Happiness Hour” program, led a series of colorful and engaging workshops. The children participated in storytelling, drama games, craft workshops inspired by local coastal wildlife, personality development trainings, and creative dance sessions, ensuring they were engaged and inspired each day. Their creativity was given plenty of space to flourish, culminating in a short film series that documented their holiday.

According to the participants, every moment felt like a special event, but the one-day sightseeing trip to Zadar was particularly unforgettable. The group visited the famous glass museum and the archaeological museum, learning about the Roman city founded by ancient Illyrian tribes. The unique beauty of the city, especially the vibrant evening atmosphere and the illuminated central square, will surely remain a cherished memory for the children.

Based on feedback from the adults, the young ones quickly opened up, eagerly participated in all activities, and enjoyed cooking, baking, trying new flavors, and helping one another with patience and care. At the end of the holiday, the children’s home staff created a questionnaire for the children, which clearly reflected that the sea and every aspect of the holiday provided them with experiences they will cherish for a lifetime. We are thrilled to have played a part in making this memorable holiday a reality.
