A Step Closer to the World: A Rewarding Vacation on the Adriatic

From August 31 to September 5, 2024, 21 children from the Child Protection Center and Primary School of Vas County had the opportunity to participate in a memorable experience camp in Croatia. Made possible by a generous grant from the Gattyán Foundation, this initiative allowed the children, selected for their exceptional behavior and academic achievements, to enjoy a well-deserved vacation on the beautiful Adriatic coast.

The camp took place in Malinska, where the children stayed in comfortable, high-quality apartments. The goal was to provide a relaxing and carefree environment. For many of the children, this was their first time seeing the sea, and the salty taste of the water, the waves, and the marine life left them with lifelong memories. Each day, the children visited the beach, where they had the chance to snorkel, explore uhderwater, and enhance their swimming skills. Over the course of the six-day camp, they also had the chance to explore several charming towns on the island of Krk, including Baška and the city of Krk.

A highlight of the trip was a journey aboard a semi-submarine named Big Marlin, where the children marveled at the diverse marine life, explored treasure chests, discovered shipwrecks, and even spotted a mermaid swimming near the boat. Each child also had the opportunity to try a fun water sport called “Couch,” which turned out to be a memorable experience for everyone.

On a full-day excursion, the group sailed from Krk to the nearby island of Rab. Along the way, they visited an uninhabited island before docking at Goli Otok, a former prison island. The children thoroughly enjoyed exploring the ruins of the old prison and learning about the island’s history. At Lopar, on the sandy shores of Rab, the children discovered yet another stunning side of the Adriatic Sea. On the return trip to Krk, the stronger swimmers had the chance to jump into the sea from the anchored boat. The journey back was made even more magical by the sight of dolphins swimming alongside the children, guiding them safely home.
