Experience Grant 2025 – Summer Holiday of the Zala County Child Protection Center

The goal of the Zala County institution was to ensure that children from all of its professional units could take part in this special camp experience—at one of the young people’s favorite destinations: Lake Balaton. Another important aim was to balance beach and leisure activities with cultural exploration.

The camp was held in Balatongyörök during the last week of summer. The six days spent at Lake Balaton offered the participating children their final chance to enjoy the freedom and sunshine of the school break, and they made sure to make the most of every moment.

After arriving at the youth camp, the focus was on getting to know one another and building a cheerful, communal atmosphere. On the second day, the group travelled to Keszthely, where they visited the Festetics Palace. After learning about this cultural heritage site, they headed to the lakeshore for a quintessential Balaton experience—eating lángos. The children then had the opportunity to try the local Ferris wheel.

The third day centered around water activities: soft rafting and swimming brought excitement and plenty of laughter. According to the caregivers, it was wonderful to see everyone enjoying the opportunities the lake provided, from playful challenges to simple relaxation on the shore.

The day before last was dedicated to exploring Szigliget, where the climb up to the castle offered both a challenge and an adventure for the children. One of the most enjoyable activities for many was the final day’s boat trip in Tapolca—for some, it was their first time in a boat or their first attempt at rowing. After the underground lake visit, the children strolled, played, and enjoyed ice cream around the Mill Pond, rounding off a truly special day.

Evenings were always about community: conversations, improvised games, and nighttime swims in Lake Balaton strengthened the developing friendships. The experience-filled days became cherished memories, and the children returned home with lasting impressions they will carry with them for years to come.
